Camilla Ker’s “Housing Crisis Quilts” project is a powerful artistic initiative that highlights the Australian housing crisis through the medium of quilt-making. Combining personal experiences and field research, Camilla’s quilts depict the harsh realities faced by individuals living in unstable housing situations, including tents, caravans, and overcrowded houses.
Her process involves designing and selecting impactful images that capture the essence of housing insecurity, conducting field research in Cairns and rural Far North Queensland to document these living conditions, and using digitally printed images on fabric to bring these stories to life. The quilts will integrate fabric scraps sourced from local op shops, pieced together using traditional quilting techniques.
Camilla’s work will culminate in public exhibitions aimed at raising awareness and engaging communities in conversations around the housing crisis. In recognition of her artistic talents, she has been accepted into three prestigious residencies, including one at The F Project in Warrnambool, Victoria.
