Artists to Learn the Art of Arts Business

Artists who want to be successful in business have the opportunity to participate in a series of business development workshops over the next few months to be run by Flying Arts and Artworkers Alliance, two of the Queensland’s iconic arts development organisations.

The professional development workshops are part of the Flying Arts Artist in Business Series which have been successful around the State and now with the support of Artworkers are available to artists in Brisbane.

Director of Artworkers Kevin Wilson said that the business workshops will be beneficial for emerging and practicing artists in Brisbane, providing an opportunity to gain arts business skills and develop pathways towards a sustainable career.

“The professional development workshops, run by experienced industry professionals, will give artists a greater understanding of business skills and principles and how these can be applied to their own practice to help forge sustainable and successful career” he said.

The first workshop ‘How to plan and manage an arts project’ is supported by Art Shed Brisbane and will be held on Sunday 18 September at Circle Gallery, 274 Montague Rd West End from 10 am – 4pm.

In the workshop experienced facilitator and Flying Arts Executive Officer, Stephen Clark,  will introduce the principles of effective arts project management and explain how a little method in the madness will help to produce a successful project.

At the end of the session students will understand the importance of project planning and the steps in the planning process as well as have practical skills in writing a project brief and a project management plan.

The cost of each workshop is $40 for members or $50 for non-members and booking and payments must be made in advance to ensure a place is available.

For more information about the workshops, or to make a booking go to www.flyingarts.org.au/brisbaneworkshops or call Flying Arts on 3844 7211

I would like to sincerely thank those who have donated. Your donations contribute to the delivery of our workshop programs and to enabling us to provide individual and group mentoring to artists experiencing disability or disadvantage. We are also very grateful for a number of donations to our SAFE Fund which provides fast, flexible funding to artists experiencing disability or disadvantage who want to pursue a professional career.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Another busy month for Access Arts. The year is really in full swing, with a number of our artists being selected to exhibit work and several being offered performance opportunities.

This month I was thrilled to receive a scholarship from the Trust Company to attend a three-day Not-for-profit Management Development Program at the University of Technology in Sydney. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet other managers of not-for-profit organisations and exchange ideas and strategies. I also returned with increased knowledge and new perspectives on areas such as funding, philanthropy, social networking, leadership and legal issues. My sincere thanks to the Trust Company, the University of Technology,  the Australian Scholarships Foundation and my fellow students for such an enriching and inspirational opportunity which will benefit Access Arts and me immeasurably. I would encourage any members who are interested in training or further studies but need assistance to cover costs to visit the Australian Scholarships Foundation at www.scholarships.org.au. March 2011 Newsletter

FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Hello again. Before I get into the highlights for the month, a few congratulations are in order which I thought you would like to hear of.  Firstly, to Joelene Rusling, our Community Arts Administrator on her recent engagement. Secondly, to former Project Co-ordinator, Sally Bellingham, (formerly Josephson) and her husband on the birth of their baby boy, Eli Frey on 1 March. Congratulations to all and on behalf of everyone at Access Arts, wishing you the very best for the future.

The highlight of the month for me was assisting with Access Arts’ recent disability awareness training session. Access Arts offers disability awareness training to organisations on a quarterly basis at $50 per head and on request if you need group training. I was delighted to see staff from a range of organisations in attendance along with individual arts workers. The feedback received was very positive and many participants said they particularly benefited from experiencing a short movement exercise whilst blindfolded as it gave them the opportunity to consider ways to restructure it to make it more accessible. In addition to disability awareness training, we also offer access audits which provide organisations with a comprehensive analysis of their venue, services, management and employment practices as they relate to access by people experiencing disabilities. Feel free to contact us if you would like further information. Continue reading
